Fort Loundon State Historic Park

Updated: Jan 11, 2022

The paddle trip starts at the canoe/kayak launch in the museum and picnic area parking. Two options are available. The short option is to paddle downstream for .5miles and turn left towards the marina on the Little Tennessee. The Sequoyah Lake Resort and Marina has a lakeside restaurant with burgers and beers. The long option is to keep the island (Fort Loundon State Historic Park) on your right. In about 2.5 miles, it is necessary to paddle through a narrow tunnel (Under HWY 360). Continue paddling with the island on your right side and pass a small island on either side. Then paddle under a bridge ( Hwy 360) until you see the marina. From the marina, paddle downstream and bear right when you see the large Hwy 411 bridge.

There are great trail running or hiking trails that leave from this parking lot. The views of the mountains and Tellico lake are superb and especially good in the fall. There are 4.5, 5.3, and 6.8 mile options depending on whether you do the museum loop, the old road out and back or the side trail on the main loop.

The Sequoyah Birthplace Museum adds another choice for this visit. As you leave the FLSHP road make a left on Hwy 360 to get to Sequoyah Birthplace Museum.
